Jim Cooper
Professor, Curriculum and Instruction

Jim is Commonwealth Professor of Education and was Dean of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia from 1984 to 1994. As dean, he led the initiative to restructure the teacher education program, moving to an innovative five-year program that integrates the study of arts and sciences, professional education and field experiences, and culminates in the simultaneous awarding of both a bachelor's degree in an academic major and a master of teaching degree for all elementary, secondary, and special education students. This program has received much national visibility, including a one million dollar equipment grant from IBM Corporation. He has remained active as a national leader in the area of educational technology policy, and recently chaired the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Task Force on Technology and Teacher Education which produced the NCATE Report on Technology and the New Professional Teacher. In 2000, he served on the American Association of University Women (AAUW) commission on "Gender, Technology, and Teacher Education".
