A Graphical Analysis of M&M’s Data

Activity Description Activity Guide

This investigation uses the M&M’s data from the previous activity.  This activity is designed to be an introduction to the graphing capabilities of a spreadsheet.

Mathematical Topics: Students will create bar graphs and pie graphs, use these graphs and the statistical calculations done in a previous activity to compare individual data with class data and discuss the effect of sample size.  In the extension, students will compare class data with the expected distribution published by the Mars company.

Mathematical Thinking: In this activity, students need to analyze graphs and statistical calculations and make inferences and conjectures. In the extension, students will compare and discuss randomly sampled data with the expected distribution.

Technology: Students will learn how to create a bar graph and pie graph, format a graph, add data to a graph, duplicate a graph, change the chart type of a graph, view the M&M’s home page (if internet access is available), and copy and paste an image on the Web for use in a local document.
