Sunspots and Geomagnetic Disturbances

Activity Description Activity Guide Background

In this activity, students will analyze two sets of scientific data and discuss possible relationships between them.

Mathematical Topics: Students will compare two data sets demonstrating periodic cycles, compare the cycles’ periods, plot the data against time and observe any trends.

Mathematical Thinking: Students will analyze data in tabular and graphical form, determine if a pattern exists, interpret the graph of the data against time, use a pattern to predict future peaks and lows in the cycles.

Technology: The students will import data from the internet (if access is available), plot two data sets on the same plot, create a secondary axis, and format the graph.

The following graph shows the relationship between the peaks and lows of sunspot numbers and the AA index.
