 Conceptualizing Correlation and Regression Equations

Activity Description

Activity Guide

This activity uses the dynamic environment in Fathom to help students conceptualize a formula used for the correlation coefficient and regression equation.

Mathematics Topics: Students will gain a deeper conceptual understanding of the computation of the correlation coefficient, linear regression, and the effects of outliers on these computations.

Mathematical Thinking: In this activity, students explore the connection between numerical, algebraic and graphical representations of data.

Technology: The students will learn to use Fathom as a dynamic environment for plotting data, least-squares regression lines, calculating values and measures, and plotting functions and plotting values.

Pedagogical goals:  Students will discuss the benefits and drawbacks for using technology tools to develop both conceptual and procedural understanding of statistical techniques. Students will also experience and discuss the learning of correlation and regression from a conceptual and contextual approach.

You will need to download the Correlparts.ftm Fathom file to use in this activity.
