From Secant Lines
to Tangent Lines

Mathematics: This activity demonstrates one of many ways that Sketchpad can be used in a math analysis course. Students will construct a secant line to a curve and investigate the slopes of secant lines to the curve. They will use the dynamic features of Sketchpad to explore the relationship between the slopes of secant lines and the slope of tangent lines, and will express this relationship as a limit statement. They will use the results of their exploration to construct the tangent line to the curve. Mathematical Thinking: Students will make predictions, conjectures, and generalizations about the concepts mentioned above. Technology: The Geometer's Sketchpad 4.0.
