Geometry
Related VA SOL: G.11
Time
Frame: 90-minute
block period
Objectives:
·
Students will construct a line
segment congruent to a given line segment.
·
Students will construct the
bisector of a line segment.
·
Students will construct a
perpendicular line to a given line through a point not on the line.
·
Students will construct a
perpendicular line to a given line through a point on the line.
·
Students will construct the
bisector of a given angle.
·
Students will construct an angle
congruent to a given angle.
Materials:
·
Worksheet #1 : Formal Constructions
·
Compass
·
Ruler
Procedures:
On worksheet #1:
A.
Line segment: constructing a line segment congruent to a given line
segment.
B.
Bisector of a line segment: constructing a bisector of a line segment.
This procedure is also used to construct a perpendicular bisector.
C.
Perpendicular lines: constructing a perpendicular line to a given line
from a point on the line and constructing a perpendicular line to a given line
from a point not on a line.
D.
Angles: constructing an angle congruent to a given angle and constructing
an angle bisector.
Assessment:
Students need to practice constructing,
not drawing these geometric objects. On a test or a quiz, you should include
problems similar to the ones on the worksheet. While students are doing the
worksheet, it is imperative for you to make yourself available to student
questions.
Suggestions/Comments (if applicable):
Some students may have difficulties with this assignment,
especially if they have never used a compass. If necessary, please go over the
usage of compasses. This lesson may take another block. Let students help each
other.
