Day 3: Extensions of Learning

RATIONALE

This section is intended to give the students an opportunity to explore the world of probability, genetics and ethics on their own terms.  Much that has been learned by the students thus far has been presented to them in a way that they might best understand the mathematics of probability and its application to genetics. Now, the students are on their own to research a topic that has caught their interest over the last two lessons.  As a result of their own understanding of probability and genetics, students will be able to make educated arguments to back their opinion on ethical dilemmas.

Have students choose from one of the following topics:

"To Breed or not to Breed."   This is the predicament that many horse and dog  breeders and owners face.  At first thought this situation might sound a bit superficial, but through further introspection, students will find that they will be answering questions about their own belief systems.

Before you begin your research on either a heredity problem related to horses or dogs read this very general, yet informative article by C. A. Sharp.

A Doctor's Advice  Technology has advanced our knowledge-base light years beyond what we knew only a few years ago.  This especially true in the field of the human genome.  This extension provides the student to play the part of a doctor who needs to advise a couple on whether or not to become parents.  Family history will play a big part in their decision.  What educated guidance can you give to them?

Our Social Condition  This exploration allows the students to look at the society as a whole.  What are the social and economical issues which have prompted and stemmed from genetic research?  Bioethicists are facing the enormous challenge of balancing applied knowledge against experimental restraint in the name of principle.
