Students can be influenced by the media in many different ways.  Sometimes this influence can lead to students fostering misconceptions about the probability of the "event" occurring.  Students can be misled into believing the probabilities of events are higher or lower then they actually are.  Students can believe that the more something is seen in the media corresponds to its probability of happening in real life without considering that the media covers stories that are news and not just everyday events.
