Objectives :  By the end of the lesson students will :

·        review and discuss their knowledge of the War of 1812 and brainstorm what they know about the taking of Washington in a K-W- L chart

·        analyze the taking of Washington and the personal feelings of Dolley Madison by reading and discussing her famous letter to her sister

·        reflect upon the taking of Washington, Dolley Madison’s position, and the War of 1812 by responding to Dolley Madison’s in a one or more page letter as her sister

 

SOL :  5.6 (C)  The student will describe the growth and change in America from 1801-1861, with emphasis on the principal relationships between the United States and the European Powers.
