Go to the Newspaper
Search Page. For both the Staunton Spectator and the Republican
Vindicator, search ALL years for the word "Downey."
You will get a list of dates that you can click to go to abstracts
for that day's newspaper. Once you get to the abstract files, use
your browser's "find" function to search for the word "Downey." This
will take you to an abstract of the article. If a full transcription
of the article is available, read that as well.
As you read, take notes using the chart below. After you have finished
newspaper articles, go to the census
manuscript search page for Augusta County, Virginia. Search for
the names of all the people named in the articles you read.
Continue filling out the chart. For each person you search by, record
full name, age, occupation, real and personal wealth, and birthplace.
After you have searched the census manuscripts, read Daniel
Downey's last will and testament. Read and take notes on it as
you did for the other sources. When you have finished finding out
all you can about the story of Daniel Downey, write a summary of the
story of Daniel Downey in the space below. (Don't forget to include
what happened to Margaret Lee.)
