Center for Technology and Teacher Education - Social Studies Module: Resistance to Afican American Education

Procedures:

Tell students that they are to use the VCDH Dolley Madison project to consider various events in Dolley Madison’s life
Show students how to access the time periods of her life, focusing especially on The Washington Years, The Montpelier Years, and Widowhood. (All can be found at the following address: http://moderntimes.vcdh.virginia.edu/madison/index.html).
Show students that they can find a timeline, images, letters and background information from each of the time periods.

Students are to choose 10 events from Dolley Madison’s life that took place during any of the three aforesaid time periods.
Students are to choose these events either from any of the sections (i.e., background information, timeline)
Students are to record these events in the left-hand column of a chart provided by the teacher
In order to complete the rest of the chart, students are to use the other sections to confirm these events.

Two examples of completed rows are provided on the chart. The knee event was originally found on the timeline and confirmed by searching through the letters from the same time period. The wedding event was found by searching through the letters and confirmed by the timeline.
