Assessment:

Students should write a letter as if they were a wounded soldier serving in the Civil War. The letter should describe the ailment, the pain, the fears and emotions, the treatment, and the facilities. It will be graded for both factual content and level of empathy demonstrated. In addition or as an alternative, students should draw a picture of what they see as they look around the hospital ward.
