Procedures:
- Brief students on as much background information as they need to know
to begin an exercise on patriotism. Background
information is available.
- Instruct students to read the assigned
letters and a newspaper article related to patriotism in the pre-Civil
War South. All students should read all letters, though the students may
later complete the worksheets in groups. Students may wish to search the
Valley archive for additional sources after reading the assigned materials.
- Students should be able to complete the
worksheet while and after reading the primary sources.
- After the class has completed the readings and answered the worksheet
questions, the class should be brought back together for discussion. Discussion
topics can include:
- Why do you think John Cochran was so patriotic toward the South?
- How did Cochran's love of the South help influence his views on secession?
