L. Douglas Wilder

     Lawrence Douglas Wilder was born on January 17, 19 He was born in
 Richmond, Virginia.  He was the first black governor in the United States.
 He went to Virginia Union University in 1951.  Wilder was drafted into the
 Army in 1952.  He served as an infantry man.  He was the chief executive of
 Virginia from 1990 to 1994.  Wilder, a Democrat, defeated his republican
 opponent General J. Marshall Coleman in the 1989 election.  He served only
 one term.
