Brief students on as much of the background
material that you think that they need to complete the exercise.
Instruct students to read selected letters, diary
entries and newspapers relating to this issue. These documents have been
carefully chosen to facilitate the question posed in this lesson. If you decided
to divide the class into groups make sure all students are informed about
the content of all the documents.
When students have finished answering the questions on the worksheet reconvene
the whole group to share findings. Questions for whole class discussion (after
they have shared the answers on their worksheet):
Why might some soldiers have wanted substitutes?
What do you think was the purpose of the substitution rule?
What would you have done if you had been in the position of A. W. Kersh?
After the discussion have students answer questions on the worksheet
for this lesson.
