            Anticipatory Set:

Begin by setting the mood by turning the lights off and having the students sit in a circle around a makeshift fire.  Remind the students this is how the Native Americans passed information from generation to generation.  Read the students two survivors stories about what happened at the Wounded Knee Massacre.

Discussion following the reading of the stories.  Discuss the fact that different people see a different perspective.  For instance, Whites referred to the incident as the Battle of Wounded Knee while Native Americans called it the Wounded Knee Massacre.

Compare the use of the word “battle” with “massacre” terminology.

Write journal entries from the point of view of Native Americans and from the point of view of soldiers.
